The Ugly Bathroom Contest
Paul Brennan came up with the idea to sponsor an “Ugly Bathroom Contest”. The bathroom would be valued at $10,000.00 and would be given to someone who could really use it and would appreciate it. He’d wanted to do something like this for a long time as a way of giving back to the community.
Paul ran the idea by his fellow contractors in the construction industry. They included: Mike and Matt Reiland of Johnson-Reiland Builders and Remodelers, Andrew Schwab of Lampert Lumber, and Mike Schulz of Schulz Electric. Andrew Schwab, Assistant Manager at Lampert’s said they’d had done something similar a few years ago when they sponsored an Ugly Kitchen Contest. All agreed this was a great idea. They advertised the contest in the Northfield News and the Shopper and qualifying residents had to live in the zip codes of Northfield, Dundas, Nerstrand and Dennison. To enter they needed to submit a story. 11 entries were submitted and Paul and the others began to visit the homes. When Andrew and Paul met with Michelle and saw her bathroom and learned more about her and her family they knew they’d found the winner of the contest.
Michelle’s a single mother who works several jobs and has a 6 year-old son who is autistic. The current bathtub leaked and she was using a green tote inside the tub to bathe him. She was very appreciative and thrilled when all the guys showed up to redo her bathroom. Traci Kern of TKern Photography donated her time and talent to photograph before and after pictures of the bathroom.
The entire project was completed in just three weeks. SEE GALLERY OF PICTURES BEFORE AND AFTER
